A marble capital, a burning gas crater, and the ruins of Merv — once the largest city on earth.
The strangest country on the route, and the hardest to enter. Ashgabat is built almost entirely of white marble and is close to empty. Merv, out in the desert, was briefly the biggest city in the world before the Mongols erased it.
And then there is Darvaza — a collapsed drilling rig that has been burning since the Soviets set it alight, out in the black sand, with nothing around it.
