Scale is the point. You can drive for six hours and watch the horizon do nothing at all, which is either tedious or the most restful thing you have ever done.

Almaty sits under snow peaks with good coffee and better mountains. Turkestan holds the Yasawi mausoleum — Timur's builders stopped work when he died, and the scaffolding holes are still there.

Visa-free for 30 days for over 50 nationalities, including the EU, UK, US, Canada and Australia. Registration is automatic on arrival by air.

Quand partir

May, June, September for the steppe and canyons. Almaty's mountains are excellent from June to September; the city is bitterly cold from December.
